Next Level German

Empowering English speakers to live, work, and connect confidently in Germany.

You're Not Bad at German. You're Overextended.

If you've ever concluded that you're bad at languages, read this first. You're not bad at German. You're overextended.

A very full life

You moved countries. You're doing your job in a second language, or looking for one. You're deciphering a Nebenkostenabrechnung, a Kita waiting list, an Elterngeld form, an insurance letter with a deadline you noticed on day nine of a fourteen-day window.

Every ordinary thing costs you three times what it used to. By evening you've spent your whole capacity on decisions that used to be automatic.

And then you sit down to "learn German", and nothing sticks, and you conclude that you're bad at languages.

What is actually happening

You're overextended in the middle of a full-life transition, and your nervous system is doing exactly what it should: protecting you from one more situation where you might fail in public.

That is the real blocker. Not vocabulary. Not grammar. Not your accent.

It also explains why the usual advice doesn't help. "Study more" asks for more of the one thing you have none of. Apps aren't bad; they're just not enough. They hand you material, and they can't give you a situation that is real, meaningful to you, repeatable and pitched at your level.

What we do instead

We don't start by giving you more to study. We start by making everyday situations survivable, then repeatable, and then yours.

That is what the four conditions of DELA are for, and it is why Next Level German is built around real places and real people rather than a longer to-do list. Each stage brings something specific:

  • Stability. Everyday situations stop knocking you over.
  • Competence. You sound as capable as you are.
  • Agency. You join in, and you sound like yourself again.
  • Belonging. You're in on the conversation.

The German is the vehicle, not the destination.

If this is you

You didn't fail at anything. You have been solving a very large problem with very little spare capacity, and you were using methods designed for people with plenty.

What changes things is a different set of conditions. That's what we build.
